Frank Hefferly was born in Austria on May 24, 1878. His father had immigrated to the United States ahead of his family and found a job in the coal mines of Gallup, New Mexico. Frank Hefferly joined his father in the mines at age 11. He joined the United Mine Workers of America in 1898. John L. Lewis was born in Lucas, Iowa in 1880. From 1917 until his death in 1969 he served the United Mine Workers of America, acting as its president from 1920 to 1960.
